How We Rate Games
Last Updated: June 2026
Transparency matters to us. Every game on BestGamer receives a rating from our editorial team, and we want you to understand exactly how those ratings are determined. This page explains our complete review process, the criteria we evaluate, and the standards we hold ourselves to.
Our Review Process
Every game that appears on BestGamer goes through the same rigorous evaluation process. Here is what happens from the moment we discover a game to the moment it appears on our site:
- Discovery - We find games through developer submissions, gaming communities, industry events, and our own research. We also accept game suggestions from our players (see our Contact page).
- Initial Screening - Before playing, we check that the game loads correctly, runs in modern browsers, and meets our basic technical requirements. Games that crash, require outdated plugins, or have broken functionality are rejected immediately.
- Hands-On Play - At least one team member plays the game thoroughly. We do not just skim the first level; we spend significant time with each title to understand its mechanics, difficulty curve, and overall experience. For most games, this means at least 30 minutes of active play.
- Multi-Device Testing - We test every game on both desktop (keyboard and mouse) and mobile (touch controls). A game must work well on at least one platform; ideally, it works well on both.
- Content Safety Review - We evaluate each game for age-appropriate content. While we are a general-audience site, we flag anything that might be inappropriate for younger players.
- Editorial Discussion - For borderline cases, our team discusses the game together. We debate its strengths and weaknesses before making a final decision on whether to include it.
Rating Criteria
We rate games on a scale from 1.0 to 5.0, in 0.1 increments. Our ratings are based on five core criteria, each weighted according to its importance to the overall player experience:
1. Gameplay Quality (35% weight)
This is the most important factor. We evaluate whether the core gameplay loop is fun, engaging, and well-designed. Does the game have clear objectives? Are the controls responsive? Is there a satisfying progression system? Does the game respect the player's time? A game with excellent gameplay makes us want to keep playing, even when the review is "over."
2. Visual Design (20% weight)
We assess the art direction, visual clarity, and overall aesthetic quality. This is not about photorealistic graphics - a beautifully designed pixel art game can score just as high as a polished 3D title. What matters is that the visuals are cohesive, appealing, and support the gameplay effectively. We also check that UI elements are readable and well-organized.
3. Technical Performance (20% weight)
A great game that runs poorly is not a great experience. We evaluate loading times, frame rate stability, input responsiveness, and cross-browser compatibility. Games that load quickly, run smoothly at 60fps, and respond instantly to player input score higher. We also check for bugs, glitches, and crashes during our testing.
4. Content Depth (15% weight)
We consider how much content the game offers relative to its format. A puzzle game with 200 well-designed levels scores higher than one with 20 repetitive ones. We also value variety, replayability, and whether the game offers meaningful challenges that keep players engaged over multiple sessions.
5. Accessibility and Usability (10% weight)
Can players of different skill levels enjoy the game? Is there a tutorial or onboarding for new players? Are the controls intuitive? Does the game work on mobile devices with touch controls? We value games that are easy to pick up but offer depth for experienced players.
Our Rating Scale
- 4.5 - 5.0 - Exceptional. Among the best in its category. We enthusiastically recommend it to all players.
- 4.0 - 4.4 - Excellent. A high-quality game with only minor flaws. Highly recommended.
- 3.5 - 3.9 - Good. A solid game with clear strengths and some areas for improvement. Worth playing.
- 3.0 - 3.4 - Average. Has notable qualities but also significant weaknesses. May appeal to specific audiences.
- Below 3.0 - Below our standards. Games rated below 3.0 are generally not featured on BestGamer.
Editorial Independence
Our ratings are determined solely by our editorial team based on the criteria above. We do not accept payment for higher ratings, and game developers cannot influence our reviews. Our goal is to provide honest, useful guidance to help players find games they will enjoy.
We also do not accept payment to include games on BestGamer. Every game on our site earned its place through our review process. If a game is not good enough, we do not list it, regardless of whether the developer offers compensation.
Updating Our Reviews
Games change over time. Developers release updates, fix bugs, and add new content. We periodically revisit our featured games and update our ratings when significant changes warrant it. If a game receives a major update that improves (or worsens) the experience, we will reassess and adjust our rating accordingly.
Each game page shows the date it was last updated, so you can tell how current our evaluation is.
Player Feedback
We value player input. If you disagree with one of our ratings or believe a game deserves reconsideration, we want to hear from you. Email us at lunaooo1225@gmail.com with the game name and your thoughts. We read every message and take player feedback into account during our periodic review updates.
Our Commitment
We believe that honest game reviews serve everyone: players find better games, and developers receive fair evaluations. Our editorial standards exist to ensure that every rating on BestGamer is earned, transparent, and trustworthy. If you ever have questions about how we arrived at a particular rating, do not hesitate to reach out.
